A kidney transplant is considered the preferred treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), offering improved quality of life and long-term health outcomes compared to dialysis.
At Renal Specialists of Houston, our experienced nephrologists are part of the team in leading transplant centers, including Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center in the Texas Medical Center. From initial evaluation through post-transplant follow-up, we are involved in every step of your care.
Not all patients qualify for a kidney transplant. Eligibility is determined through a thorough evaluation by a multidisciplinary transplant team. This process includes multiple appointments and diagnostic tests to ensure transplant is a safe and appropriate option for you.
The pre-transplant evaluation typically includes:
- A physical examination
- Detailed medical and surgical history
- Blood typing and tissue typing
- Chest X-ray, EKG, and echocardiogram
- Gastrointestinal and pulmonary evaluations
- Additional procedures or consultations as needed
You will also visit with key members of the transplant team, including a transplant surgeon, coordinator, social worker, and pharmacist.
If you are considering a kidney transplant, speak with your Renal Specialists of Houston nephrologist. We will assess your eligibility and refer you to a transplant center promptly to begin the evaluation process.
